Why pastels? Can I commission other media-based pieces?

Good question. I’ll go into quite a bit of depth here as this is core to the art style for my brand. I have experience in ink, coloured pencils, pastel pencil, marker, digital, and oil- and acrylic painting. So, why have I settled on pastel pencils? Well, I haven’t! I hope to bring oil and acrylic painting into my repertoire of offers. For now, though, it’s pastels, as I am currently in a small apartment, and don’t wish to have to worry about the oil and acrylic paint fumes for now. When I move, you can be sure they’ll be offered. I already use markers and inks as base sketches for my pastel art, and layer over these guidelines with pastels. Digital is also useful for working over and combining reference images.

Even though coloured pencils are commonly used for pet portraits, and I may once or twice use them for some things, like whiskers, but it ultimately comes down to personal preference. Sure, you can get finer details with coloured pencils, but realism is more about tones and shadows, and unfortunately, I simply do not like the sheen or white gaps that appears alongside the use of coloured pencils. The reflection, even with applied with low pressure, detracts from contrast and darker tones. If there aren’t enough layers, the “tooth” of the layers of the paper aren’t filled, meaning the base layer colour of the canvas pop through. There are methods of ways to work around this, working in elliptical and/or circular motions, using colour pencil solvents, like turpentine, Zest-It, etc., paper stumps, colour pencil blenders or blending powder, but at the end of the day, I like the roughness of the pastels and the less pressure needed to work.
